CME (Continuing Medical Education) consists of educational activities, which may be in-person, webinars, journal-based, print materials, or podcasts, that serve to maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, competence, and/or performance of a physician's clinical practice.
CME credit may be designated by CME Providers in quarter hour increments. For one hour spent in an educational activity, you would receive 1 CME credit. Breaks or other non-educational activities generally do not qualify for CME credit.
CME credits may be earned by participating in educational activities that have been certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditTM. Educational activities may include in-person meetings, live and recorded webinars, print materials, journals, or podcasts, to name a few modalities.
Each US state licensure board has its own requirements for physicians (and other clinician) per licensure period. The average hours per year (not licensure term) can vary from 12 to 50 hours. It is important to check with your state medical association for your specific CME requirements. See State CME Requirements.
